The Oscar Nominees Include 16 First-Timers in the Acting Categories

The Oscar nominees were announced yesterday, and 16 people in the four acting categories are being recognized for the first time.

They include the ENTIRE Best Actor category:

Austin Butler“Elvis”

Colin Farrell“The Banshees of Inisherin”

Brendan Fraser“The Whale”

Paul Mescal“Aftersun”

Bill Nighy“Living”

Even though Brandan Fraser has a shot, “The Whale” did NOT get a Best Picture nod.

“Everything Everywhere All at Once” got the most nominations . . . 11 . . . and was responsible for FOUR first-time nominees:

Michelle Yeoh for Best Actress, Ke Huy Quan for Best Supporting Actor, and Jamie Lee Curtis and Stephanie Hsu for Best Supporting Actress.

Michelle is the first Asian Best Actress nominee in Oscar history, by the way.

Steven Spielberg got ANOTHER Best Director nod for “The Fabelmans”, making him the only person to be nominated for that award in SIX different decades.

His buddy John Williams got his record 53rd nomination for scoring that film.  He’s got the most nominations of anyone ALIVE, but Walt Disney still has the most in history:  59.

Coming in second in nominations are “All Quiet on the Western Front” and “The Banshees of Inisherin”, with 9 each.

They’re up for Best Picture, along with “Everything Everywhere” and the two biggest movies of 2022, “Avatar: The Way of Water” and “Top Gun: Maverick”.

Rounding out the category are “Elvis”, “The Fabelmans”, “Tár”, “Women Talking”, and “Triangle of Sadness”.

The SNUBS people are talking about include Tom Cruise not getting a Best Actor nod for “Top Gun: Maverick”, and Viola Davis being shut out for “The Woman King”(Here are more.)

The 95th Oscars will air on Sunday, March 12th, on ABC.  Jimmy Kimmel is hosting.
