Olympics Highlights: Can the U.S. Bounce Back After a Slow Start?

The U.S. had a slow start at the Winter Olympics in Beijing this weekend.  The first medal events were Saturday and Sunday, and we snagged some silvers early, but no gold medals yet.

Snowboarder Julia Marino took silver in women’s slopestyle.  Then skier Jaelin Kauf won silver in women’s moguls.  It was our first moguls medal in eight years.

So our opening weekend was kind of a dud.  But there were more events last night, which was technically “Monday” in Beijing.  (They’re 13 hours ahead of EST, and 16 hours ahead of PST.)

The U.S. took a silver medal in the figure skating team event that aired late last night.  Russia won gold, thanks in part to Kamila Valieva landing the first ever quad jump for a woman at the Olympics.

Here’s the latest medal count we saw.  (Monday, February 7th at 4:30 a.m. EST)

1.  Russia:  6 . . . 2 gold, 2 silver, 2 bronze.

2.  Canada:  4 . . . 1 gold, 1 silver, 2 bronze.

3.  Italy:  4 . . . 0 gold, 3 silver, 1 bronze.

4.  Austria:  4 . . . 0 gold, 2 silver, 2 bronze.

5.  Sweden:  3 . . . 3 gold, 0 silver, 0 bronze.
