10 Foods That Make the Best Edible Straws

Last month, a guy at Yankee Stadium went viral, when he casually took his hot dog out of the bun . . . used a straw to hollow out the middle of the dog . . . dropped it into his beer cup . . . and then used the hot dog as an EDIBLE STRAW.  (???)

Mashed.com has a list of “10 foods that make the best edible straws.”  The hot dog is #1 . . . and they mention the guy at Yankee Stadium . . . but they claim the inspiration was also cutting back on plastic waste.  (Sure . . .)

In any event, here’s the list:

1.  Hot dogs.

2.  Twizzlers.  Unlike the hot dog, they come pre-hollowed out.

3.  Bucatini pasta.  If you’re not familiar, it’s like a cross between spaghetti and penne pasta.

4.  Veggie straws.  They’re those French fry-like snacks in the chip aisle.

5.  Cereal.  You could maybe make your own, but they have sold Froot Loops, Cocoa Krispies, and Apple Jacks edible cereal straws.

6.  Rolled wafer cookies . . . or “barquillos,” which are a popular Spanish street food.  There are a lot of variations of this cookie from different brands, in flavors like hazelnut, vanilla, chocolate, and lemon.

7.  Slim Jims.  They are the “ultimate carnivorous edible straw.”

8.  Churros.  They’re sturdy enough to withstand extended periods of being submerged under liquid, but soft enough inside to carve out your straw.

9.  Cheese sticks.  Another one that will require some drilling.

10.  Carrots.  FINALLY . . . an edible straw option that isn’t terribly unhealthy.

That said, it’s a LOT easier to get yourself amped-up for an awkward drilling session if it’s something delicious.  I think for carrot straws to catch on, they’d have to be mass produced that way.  (I might use a carrot as a straw, but I wouldn’t spend ANY amount of time carving out a carrot straw.)
