The Emmy Nominees Are Out, and the Big Winners Are Netflix, “Game of Thrones”, “SNL”, and “Westworld”
The nominees for this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards are out . . . and “Game of Thrones” leads the way with 22 nods. “Saturday Night Live” and “Westworld” are next, with 21 apiece.
“The Handmaid’s Tale” is close behind with 20.
But the biggest winner is probably Netflix, which is officially the new king of TV. Netflix scored 112 nominations, which ended HBO’s 17-year run as the most-nominated network. They ended up with 108.
That’s even more impressive when you consider that it was JUST FIVE YEARS AGO that Netflix made history by being the first streaming platform to GET an Emmy nomination and win. Now, they’re dominating.
Broadcast networks don’t get a lot of attention these days, but NBC got the third-most nominations with 78, thanks to “SNL”, “This Is Us”, and “Jesus Superstar, Live in Concert”.
“SNL” extended its existing record for the most nominations of ALL-TIME, with 252. “Game of Thrones” is next at 129. And “ER” is third with 124.
Peter Dinklage became the most-nominated person ever in the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series category, thanks to his seventh nomination for his role as Tyrion Lannister on “Game of Thrones”. He’s won twice.
Sandra Oh is the FIRST nominee of Asian descent in the ‘Leading Actress in a Drama Series’ category for her role in the BBC America show “Killing Eve”.
Several big name celebrities got their FIRST Emmy nomination: Jessica Biel for “The Sinner” . . . Penelope Cruz and Ricky Martin, both for “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story” . . . Katt Williams for “Atlanta” . . . and John Legend for “Jesus Christ, Superstar”.
John’s nomination is especially interesting, because if he wins, he’ll reach ‘EGOT’ status . . . meaning he’s won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony. Only 12 people have done it, including Whoopi Goldberg and Mel Brooks.
John has 10 Grammys, an Oscar for his song “Glory” from “Selma”, and a Tony for co-producing a show called “Jitney”.
NBC will air “The 70th Primetime Emmy Awards” live on September 17th. MICHAEL CHE and COLIN JOST from “SNL” are hosting.
